We went on our first field trip! We went to the Mississippi State University Riley Center in Meridian to see The BFG (The Big Friendly Giant) play. We will be doing a study about the author, Roald Dahl, in a couple of weeks, so we were so excited to have the opportunity to see a production of one of his famous works! We were so thrilled to watch this comical play in this beautiful theater.

We Built this City!
We had visual arts infusion where we learned about asymmetrical and symmetrical balance while looking about cityscapes. We also had been discussing math properties in class so we combined our knowledge of balance in art with balance in math. Check out our cityscapes that showcase our math properties.
Do you see the math problem?
If you thought the associative property 2 x 5 x 4 = 2 x 5 x 4, you are correct! Now do you see these math properties?
Zero property! Commutative property!

Georgia O’Keeffe
While studying famous artists, we took the time to replicate some of Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting of flowers. Each student created their own work of art from a “bee’s eye view” while showcasing his or her knowledge of our science terminology about light. Can you find the media that we used to SHOW WHAT WE KNOW about the way light travels using the terms transparent, translucent, and opaque?
Muppets!
For the past week, the students have been reading a short novel about the Mississippi native and Kermit the frog creator, Jim Hensen. After learning about his personal life and his successful career, the students created a TV show similar to the same way that Jim would have developed a skit for his Muppets. They completed a character web and a storyboard to help develop their characters and plot. While learning about simple machines in science, the student learned that their Muppet was a lever. The students built their Muppet while learning about the load, fulcrum, and force that is used to make their Muppet work. Students performed their TV show for classmates while keeping in mind the importance of voice, timing, and puppetry.
Fraction and Decimal ART!
The students were challenged to create a piece of artwork that followed a specific math criteria. They had to paint and use certain media in its two dimensional and three dimensional forms by following steps! The challenge was that each media had either a decimal or fraction amount that had to be used. They students had to change fractions to decimals and decimals to fractions in order to create their artwork and to be able to compare the amount of media.
